SESSION 5: Glasses, Coatings and Related Materials

The role of glass in everyday life has always been large and continues to grow. Current developments include low iron glass sheets for photovoltaics where windows highly transparent in the visible and near infrared are needed to optimize performance. In the telecommunications industry new optical fibres offer extended transmission windows, optical amplification over wide wavelength ranges for multiplexing and photonic crystal materials where in built structure on the micron scale creates useful interference effects. Information storage, e.g. using photostructural effects in thin chalcogenide glass layers, is needed in an information rich age. Surface coatings and surface structure modification produce valuable optical effects as well self-cleaning characteristics and even electrical conductivity.

The excellent chemical durability of tailored glasses is the basis for developing waste disposal technologies and its use as a storage medium for the pharmaceutical industry. At the same time less durable compositions find uses as biomaterials.

The viscosity characteristics of typical commercial glasses are also useful in making glazes and producing sintered products, which may also be partially crystallized.

Enhanced properties are being achieved by nanocrystallisation within glassy matrices in carefully tailored compositions, and templating techniques using sol gel synthesis to produce complex structures, often based on mixtures of conventional glassy materials with organic molecules, metallic nanoparticles or ceramics.

Understanding of these materials is also growing as modern structural studies allow analysis of both local and medium range ordering in glassy structures. Thermodynamic techniques are also being increasingly applied to enhance understanding of the nature of glassy materials.
